Appendix E: Scanning Barcodes
Use smartphone / tablet camera
You may find this scanning mode is most useful for e-tickets (brought in by conference attendees) as these are likely to be on a piece of paper, phone screen or as a lanyard badge that is easy to scan, but it can also be used to scan Check-in labels if you prefer.
-
Depending on the capabilities of the default browser installed on your device, you may need to install the latest version of the Chrome Browser
-
Launch a Check-in kiosk
-
From the main Search screen, tap the Camera icon (if the camera icon is not visible, your device doesn't support the required capabilities):
-
The keyed entry will switch to a camera view.
-
You may be prompted to allow your browser to access your device's camera - if so, click Allow:
-
?To scan the barcode, simply hold the barcode in view of the camera. As soon as the barcode is detected, it will automatically be scanned and the relevant action taken.
Tips:
-
The same barcode cannot be scanned twice in a row in this mode (to avoid accidentally doing so)
-
If you are using an Android phone, you can enable sounds for successful and failed scans - see information here
-
If you have any trouble with the default camera settings (for example, switching to a different camera), you can change them in the Advanced Camera Settings screen by tapping
Use a dedicated scanner
You may find this scanning mode easiest to use for scanning Check-in labels that are attached to children's clothing as the dedicated scanners tend to be more flexible with scanning distance and you can use the laser to judge the scan rather than having to watch the device screen. But you can use a dedicated scanner for both Check-in labels and e-tickets.
-
These scanners act like a keyboard, so it will be as if anything they scan was typed in on the keyboard (a barcode is just a series of numbers and/or letters)
-
Depending on the type of scanner, you can connect it to your device by either USB or Bluetooth
-
Once connected, launch a Check-in Kiosk as usual
-
Ensure the Search box is ready and selected to type in
-
Scan the barcode
